Mould Prevention
In a household of 2 active people, with cooking, the use of kettles, having a bath or shower, washing and drying cloths and sleeping can generate up to 25 pints / 14+ litres of moisture in a day.
To prevent mould growth, these are some great ways to reduce moisture levels and in doing so reduce the risk of Mould:
Ensure there is adequate and increase ventilation whenever possible
Try to maintain a consistent temperature 18-21 degrees
Soak up any condensation that has pooled
Wipe down windows or any surfaces that have been effected by condensation
Leave curtains slightly apart or blinds not fully dropped to reduce temperature difference
Open a window to allow any air with high moisture content to escape
When cooking always put a pan lid over a boiling pan
Always use an extractor fan when boiling food, bathing or when taking a shower.
Make sure tumble dryers are vented as per manufacturers recommendations
If drying cloths inside the house do so in the bathroom with door closed, window slightly open and extractor fan on
Do not shower longer than is truly needed – reduces airborne vapour levels
Do not dry cloths or other garments/towels etc on radiators
When running a bath start running the cold water for a while before adding the hot water. This will reduce steam levels
Keep kitchen and bathroom doors closed so to prevent water vapour escaping to other parts of the house
Do not allow furniture to be placed tightly against the wall. A little space will allow for air circulation
Do not block any air vents.
You should allow wardrobes or cupboards where clothing is stored to be opened once in a while to allow air circulation
If trickle vents are fitted, keep them open.
The benefit of following these great tips is it will help to reduce condensation on windows and cold surface, prevent clothes and furnishings becoming musty and lower the problems of mould occurring on walls and ceilings.
